February in Review

February in Review

February is a short month, but my goodness, it flew by! How in the world are we almost three full months into 2017?! Time flies when you are having fun, I suppose.

As I mentioned in my January in Review, I was going to set mini-goals and mantras for each month that all build up to my larger 2017 plans. This February, my goals consisted of: reading two books (fail), taking better care of my skin (check), practicing yoga every damn day (mostly check) and deep cleaning my apartment (check). Beyond these tangible goals, my mantra these past 28 days was:  It doesn’t matter what others are doing, it matters what you are doing. I think the biggest source of my unhappiness in life is that I compare what I’m doing and my progress so much to those around me. It’s hard to be content when you are constantly in the comparison game. So, this month I actively tried to tame my FOMO, appreciate my moment, my progress and my journey and check my social media envy at the door. By focusing on what I was doing, I realized how much more I enjoyed time with friends, Friday evenings spent alone catching up on TV while others partied and how much I really loved and had missed running with no pressure or pace expectation to compare my pace to. This has been a really impactful statement and theme in my life that I’m going to continue to focus on this the remainder of 2017.

Here are some more highlights from this short month:

My friends resurrected middle school, early 2000s sleepovers, and we spent quality time together. Three of my best friends and I spent a Saturday evening, gossiping over pizza, chips and brownies and watching Crossroads (I will always love Britney Spears). It was so fun to have the same middle school vibe with no drama.

I was published back to back in Elite Daily. My articles on “9 Reasons Being Broke Was Actually The Best Thing to Happen to Me” and “I Haven’t Even Found ‘The One’ Yet, But I already Know I Will Keep My Name” were published this month. I think it’s important to celebrate our own accomplishments and recognize when hard work is paying off.

My boyfriend and I took a spontaneous, quick camping trip out to Anza Borrego. We tent-camped in Blair Valley and watched the beautiful sunset touch the mountains. We sat by the fire, talking and eating, uninterrupted by cell phones or any other distractions. We saw bright stars and the moonglow, listened to rain hit the tent at 5 AM and hiked 11 miles the next morning.  On our way back to San Diego, we stopped in Julian for cider and pie. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect weekend, honestly.

I spent a long weekend in Cabo celebrating one of my best friends who is getting married next weekend! This was my first time in Mexico, and it was amazing. Our house’s pool overlooked a golf course and the ocean, we had caterers and everyone on the trip was awesome. I wish I was still laying by the pool soaking up the sun, drink in hand.

I celebrated my six-month anniversary with my boyfriend. This may not seem like a ton of time, but I choose to celebrate everything. And after two and a half years of being single…this is a long time.

I spent the month exploring San Diego neighborhoods. As I scrolled through photos, I realized I spent this month popping through so many different neighborhoods in America’s Finest City. I spent a Saturday afternoon reading and drinking in Coronado, I took a pretty nature walk in La Jolla this past weekend, I spent a full day in Encinitas drinking coffee, sitting by the water and nomming on seafood and I visited some East Village hotspots. I will say it time and time again – I am so lucky to live here!

This month, I will be focusing myself on this mantra: “Own your dreams. There is no better way to make them happen.”

Cheers to March!
