San Diego Fitness, Part 1: F45 San Diego

Since running is no longer in my wheelhouse, I am on the hunt for other forms of fitness that give me the same (or even a fraction...) kind of happiness that running gave me. So, stay tuned while I try cycling, various forms of yoga, SUP'ing...and just about every fitness studio that San Diego has to offer. 

I began this San Diego fitness exploration at F45 Training in downtown San Diego this morning, bright and early.


A few months ago, I visited the La Jolla location of this studio and loved the intense workout. But, at the time, it was not affordable, the class times did not mesh with my schedule and the studio was a bit further than I wanted to drive at the crack of dawn. So, when F45 opened up a new location downtown a few weeks ago, I was thrilled! When you're leaving your place at 5 AM for a workout...distance makes a big difference. 

Let's back up a little. F45 began in Australia (Hugh Jackman used it to prep for his Wolverine character!) and is like a bootcamp on steroids (hypothetically, of course). The concept is pretty simple - 45 minutes of high-intensity interval and circuit training. Each day has a different theme, but overall, each workout is based on functional (aka training that prepares you for movements in daily life) exercises that work various muscle groups simultaneously. 

This morning, the 6 AM class got their bodies beaten down by the "Loyals" workout - 18 exercises with 30-second and 20-intervals of work at each. The exercises ranged from burpees to kettlebell-jacks to lunges and overhead presses. Some of the exercises seemed complicated at first...but luckily, there's screens lining the wall with GIF-like videos of the actual exercise that are easy to follow along. Whew. The amount of exercises and the fast-paced nature of the class kept me from any oncoming boredom, and the booming music in the studio kept me motivated (as well as the trainers, who walked around, correcting your form and cheering you on). By the end of 45 minutes, I was a sweaty, happy mess. 

By the end of the day, I'm already sore. Ouch. It works. 

So, F45 in a nutshell: goes by fast, so much variety, whips you into shape (burning 500+ cals per class and toning various areas all at once) and is just fun. It gave me the same high running did, honestly.
