Recovery, Part 2

Recovery, Part 2

Two weeks ago, I went to my final orthopedist appointment (fingers crossed that it's the last one ever). My orthopedist "cleared" me - aka I was given the green light to resume normal life fully and completely! I finally had permission to do yoga, cycle, swim, hike...and you guessed it...run (after rebuilding some of my muscle, that is).

In large part to follow my doctor's suggestion and in (larger) part to compromise with my friends and family who advised me to wait months to run (or never run at all), I waited two weeks before lacing up my Brooks and hitting the pavement.

Instead, I hit up Groupon (unashamedly, one of my favorite sites) and bought a bunch of class packages for local neighborhood studios...how I make yoga affordable with my income! I began venturing to Indie Yoga in Ocean Beach every morning, followed by a mile or two walk around the neighborhood and pier to watch the sunrise and get my legs used to moving a little more.

I finally went on my first jog in months on Christmas Day. It was quite possibly the best Christmas gift of my entire life! My jog was slow, but the crisp air (35 degrees in Southern California - excuse me, what?) and the steady, even pace of my breath felt like home to me. I could have cared less about my pace (9:45 for one single mile...eek) - I was refreshed, energized and excited...and extremely sore from finally using some of my leg muscles after months.

Two weeks of yoga every day and one run later, I'm feeling progressively stronger and less sore (I could barely move after my first yoga class). Getting back to yoga has helped clear my mind in a period of change - it's nice to have an outlet again to handle my anxiety and stress.

Hopefully, I can run again this week and take a short hike, but for now, I am learning to be grateful for where I am at (with some bitter moments thrown in, too, if we're being honest).
